Do I Have Pulsatile Tinnitus?

Pulsatile tinnitus is a type of tinnitus. Tinnitus affects approximately fifty million Americans every year. The impact it has on the quality of life of an individual can vary from person to person. For some it can be a minor nuisance and for others it can be severely debilitating affecting sleep, work and leading to mental health issues.Tinnitus or ringing in the ears can be classified as subjective which means it is only perceived by the person suffering it or objective meaning that an observer or someone other than the sufferer can perceive it. When the tinnitus has a distinct pulse like rhythm a vascular cause is suggested.

In the neurological literature the causes and evaluation of pulsatile tinnitus have not been adequately addressed. The research in otology suggest that objective tinnitus is uncommon and when vascular in nature is rare. The most common cause is what is called an arteriovenous malformation usually involving an artery called the external carotid artery. It is stated that it can also result from traumatic or spontaneous carotid-cavernous fistulae, increased intracranial pressure or states that cause an increased output of the heart such as anemia.

At present there does not exist a drug for the treatment of tinnitus. Although many drugs used to treat other conditions such as depression or seizures are often used as tinnitus treatments the results are often less than pleasing.
