Ear ringing is a type of auditory hallucination where a perception of sound occurs in the absence of any external sound. This is referred to as tinnitus which can then be classified into two large groups of objective and subjective tinnitus. The definition of objective tinnitus is that it is a result of sound generated in the body that reaches the ear through conduction in the body tissues. For example it could be the sound of blood in a tight artery or from a muscle constricting. Different from subjective ear ringing, an observer, using a stethoscope would be able to hear the noise. With subjective tinnitus the sound that is heard by the sufferer is not associated with a real external sound and only the sufferer will be able to hear it.
This type of subjective ear ringing is far more common than objective ear ringing. A distinction must be made from auditory hallucinations which are meaningful sounds such as music and voices. These although rare can occur in various forms of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. Tinnitus or ear ringing can be a very individual experience and affect individuals very differently. For some it may be a slight nuisance for others it may cause major issues such as disturbed sleep and lead to issues like anxiety, depression and phonophobia (fear of sound).
Severe ear ringing is usually associate with abnormal perception of sound including hyperacusis which is an increased sensitivity to sound, there can also be distortion of sounds. Hyperacusis can result from traumatic head injuries and other symptoms can include tinnitus and increased sensitivity to light.
There is currently no specific medication to help with ear ringing. It is commonly poorly treated with anti-depressants. The right type of natural treatment approach has proved very successful for thousands of people. Nutritional supplements, herbal remedies and lifestyle changes can result in relief of ear ringing by targeting the underlying cause of the problem and not just treating the symptoms.
