Tinnitus Acupuncture
Research of tinnitus acupuncture demonstrates a distinctive pattern for 
those who benefit from the application: individuals whose tinnitus is strongly lateralized to one ear and who posses symmetric hearing thresholds. Because of the symmetry of hearing and the asymmetry of the tinnitus, it is unlikely these individuals have a solely auditory origin of their tinnitus. It has been suspected that these individuals may have somatically induced tinnitus. Or tinnitus that has a strong relationship with the muscles of the upper back, neck and jaw.
An astounding published case in the acupuncture literature discusses a 60 year old male who suffered tinnitus in his left ear. There was less than a 10dB difference between each ear in hearing threshold tests. He said he experienced drastic improvement after the first acupuncture session and the results were lasting for several months. A similar episode involves a 45 year old female long term tinnitus sufferer with right sided tinnitus and no hearing loss who had complete resolution of her suffering after just one session.

Beside these individual cases, but none the less astounding examples, there is one report that discusses the systematic therapy of tinnitus patients who all had chronic unilateral tinnitus. The group was divided in half about hearing loss. The tinnitus in 24% of the individuals was intermittent. Some results from the study show two patients with normal hearing and a one sided tinnitus improved with treatment. The hearing threshold tests and unilateral tinnitus of these individuals tends to suggest once again a predominantly somatic origin of the tinnitus. People who had unilateral hearing loss and unilateral tinnitus did not respond.
These results once again point to the complex nature of tinnitus and the need for an approach that is multi-faceted to address all the potential contributing factors. That way you will have the best chance of fixing your tinnitus.
